He had been part of the show for nearly two decades. His character did appear in the spin-off NCIS: Origins, where a younger version of him was played by Austin Stowell. In Entertainment Tonight’s special featurette, Harmon shared why he decided to bid adieu to this beloved character. He said, “What has always drawn me here is the character I play and to keep it fresh and to keep it challenging. Plot-wise, this character has taken the path that it did. I thought it was honest and OK with.” Moreover, he also reassured fans that Gibbs is not dying or retiring; rather, he’s enjoying a life in Alaska. In another appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Harmon also opened up about the long working hours behind the role and how they affected him. “He admitted that fatigue played a role, recalling, I think for the longest time, I was just tired. The first day [on NCIS], we worked 22 hours. So I thought, ‘That’s not exactly what I thought this was going to be.’ But we had a lot of days like that in the first four years,” he explained. Gibbs’ story came to an end in NCIS Season 19, Episode 4. In it, he gets involved in a high-profile case in Alaska, after solving which he decides to stay there. He didn’t return to Washington as he decided to spend the next chapter away from the Bureau, after serving them for many years.
