Mike Flanagan’s Carrie Is Hiding a Big Connection To Stephen King’s Other IP

Photo Credit: Prime Video Mike Flanagan’s new take on Carrie does more than retell a familiar story. The series-length adaptation plants seeds that tie Stephen King‘s lonely telekinetic teen to a much larger fictional universe, one that Flanagan has chased for years. Mike Flanagan’s Carrie makes Stephen King’s Dark Tower feel closer The series quietly pulls Carrie into a shared universe that points toward The Dark Tower. Carrie (Summer H. Howell) carries the shine, a psychic gift that surfaces as telekinesis. She sharpens it with help from Emaline (Thalia Dudek), a mystery friend who may exist only in Carrie’s lonely mind. Late evidence suggests Emaline shares the shine too, perhaps as an astral projection. Flanagan then widens the map. A documentary crew led by an unnamed filmmaker (Kate Siegel) interviews survivors of Carrie’s massacre. When the crew learns of Margaret’s gift, they calmly steer her toward death. That group hunts for Carrie, who flees with Emaline toward supposed safety. These threads invite comparisons to other King works. Emaline could hail from The Institute or the Shop in Firestarter. The video crew echoes the ancient nomads of Doctor Sleep, which Flanagan already adapted. Stephen King’s novels always hinted that Carrie belonged to something larger. This version makes that bond visible. “The beautiful thing about Stephen King is that the connections between the universe that he’s built are some of the most fun, as lovers of Stephen King, that you get to make those connections,” Mike Flanagan told TV Insider. “I do think this all exists on a certain level of the Tower, and Carrie’s place in that bigger world is something he hints at very much in the book. It was really exciting for us to be able to do that in practice and to really go into that.” Flanagan said he “hopes” to expand Carrie’s world further. Since he is still developing The Dark Tower, Carrie could feed directly into it.
