Flood claims another life in Abia, as female student drowns

A 12-year-old girl, Miss Sopuruchi Ibe, from Ndia Chukpai Compound, Mgbaga, Ebem Ohafia, Abia State, has been confirmed dead after drowning in a flooding incident in the community. Sopuruchi, a JSS 2 student of Federal Government College, Ohafia, was reportedly swept away by heavy floodwaters following a heavy downpour on Friday. The unfortunate incident occurred at about 6:00 p.m. along Eni Njoku Road, Ebem Ohafia. Following the disappearance of the young girl, members of the community launched a search for her but could not find her. Unfortunately, her lifeless body was discovered on Saturday morning, sparking community-wide mourning. Confirming the incident, the Publicity Secretary of Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU), Ifeanyi Okali, described it as sad and unfortunate. “Sadly, 12-year-old Sopuruchi Ume Ibe, who was swept away by floodwaters following a heavy downpour in Ebem Ohafia yesterday evening, has been found this morning, but unfortunately, she did not survive. “Our heartfelt condolences go to her parents, family, friends, classmates and the entire Ebem Ohafia community during this painful time,” the Publicity Secretary, Okali, mourned. The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has called on Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to resign over his comparison of petrol prices in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. The party said the governor’s comparison failed to take into account the wide difference in income and purchasing power between Nigerians and people living in the UK. In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the APM also criticised the increase in petrol prices to more than N1,500 per litre, saying Nigerians were expecting a reduction in the cost of fuel. Yusuf said the APM condemned the sharp rise in petrol prices to more than N1,500 per litre, stressing that Nigerians were expecting the price to come down. “It is unfair to compare petrol prices in Nigeria with those in the UK without taking into account the difference in workers’ incomes. Nigeria’s N70,000 minimum wage is far below what workers earn on average in the UK,” the party said. The APM used teachers to illustrate the difference, saying Nigerian teachers earn about N70,000 or less, while a teacher in the UK starts with a monthly salary of about £2,839. The party also argued that the two countries have different transport systems. It said Nigerians largely depend on informal and costly transportation, while the UK has a more structured and regulated public transport system supported by government subsidies. The APM further pointed to other oil-producing countries, including Libya and Iran, where it said petrol is sold at much lower prices. “What Governor Okpebholo failed to tell Nigerians is the fact that in other oil producing countries such as Libya and even Iran, which is presently at war, petrol is sold at an average of equivalent of N41 to N52 per litre,” the party said. The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, has said life has become increasingly difficult for Nigerians under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the N70,000 minimum wage can buy only 50 litres of petrol at N1,400 per litre. He disclosed this in a statement on Sunday by his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu. Atiku lamented that the cost of living had risen sharply under the Tinubu administration without a corresponding increase in wages for Nigerian workers. He stressed that when the country’s minimum wage was N30,000, it could buy roughly 118 litres of petrol, while the current minimum wage of N70,000 can buy only 50 litres. While acknowledging that minimum wages differ across countries, Atiku said Nigerian workers earn less than their counterparts in other oil-producing African countries, including Libya, Algeria and the Republic of Benin. “At N1,400 a litre, the entire N70,000 monthly minimum wage buys just 50 litres of petrol. What does the worker take home to feed the children? What pays the rent? What gets that worker back to work on Monday?” “The payslip has grown, but the fuel it can buy has more than halved.
