TV shows carried by a single actor's performance?

I've been watching Fringe recently and it occurred to me that this show wouldn't have made it halfway through Season 1 before being cancelled had it not been for John Noble's performance as Walter Bishop. That single character is what sells the concept of the story and had they not nailed the casting for Walter Bishop the show would have just fallen apart. They really, truly nailed that casting.
