Wiegman signs new England contract to run until 2029
Sarina Wiegman has signed a new contract to continue as England's head coach until the end of Euro 2029. Wiegman has been a tremendous success since taking charge of the Lionesses in 2021, overseeing back-to-back European Championship successes in 2022 and 2025. She also led them to the World Cup final in 2023, though they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Spain in that showpiece match. England have won 70.7% of their 82 games under Wiegman (W58 D13 L11) and have still never lost back-to-back matches under her, responding to 10 of their 11 defeats under her with a victory (D1). The Lionesses still have work to do to make next year's World Cup in Brazil, with a two-legged play-off final against Ukraine to come after they beat Greece 8-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals this month. But Wiegman will now be able to look beyond that tournament and work towards the next edition of the Euros – no manager has ever won more games at the Women's Euros than her 15. "I'm so happy to be able to carry on with this squad and cannot think of a better job in football," Wiegman told the Football Association's website. "Working for a world-class organisation like the FA, and alongside so many people dedicated to winning England teams and the growth of our game, excites me every day. "Of course, anyone who knows me will understand that my main concern right now is absolutely the World Cup, and helping this squad realise their potential in the years to come. "We have an important job to do to confirm our place in Brazil, and hopefully we can do that and give the country another special summer to remember next year." "While we will all remember the trophies and thrilling moments she has given us, I know she is only looking forward. There is no one better to lead the Lionesses into the next two tournaments. "Sarina's impact on English football has been immense, and she continues to inspire so many throughout the game. "We have so much more to do in the women’s game and she will be instrumental in helping us to achieve that." England will play the 'away' leg of their play-off tie against Ukraine on November 26, before hosting the return leg at Wembley Stadium on December 5.
