The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, has impounded 84 commercial and private vehicles for various traffic violations during a major enforcement operation carried out at key traffic-prone locations across the state. The weekend operation covered Idumota, Iddo, Ijora-Olopa, Costain and Onipanu, with the agency targeting areas where repeated violations by motorists and commercial bus operators have continued to disrupt the smooth movement of traffic. LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the agency was particularly concerned about commercial buses driving against traffic and reversing unlawfully along the one-way section between Iddo and Idumota through Cater Bridge. He warned that the practice posed significant danger to motorists, commuters and pedestrians using the route. “Motorists and other legitimate road users approaching the bridge may have little or no forewarning that a commercial vehicle is unlawfully reversing against the prescribed direction of traffic, thereby creating an extremely hazardous situation with the potential to precipitate devastating collisions, injuries and fatalities,” he said. The enforcement operation was met with resistance in some locations, with some LASTMA officers reportedly assaulted and injured while carrying out their duties. Bakare-Oki confirmed that suspected miscreants who allegedly attacked the officers and damaged operational vehicles belonging to the agency were arrested during the exercise. He said the continued enforcement was necessary to address what he described as a growing disregard for traffic regulations and restore order along major traffic corridors. Kano govt suspends durbar processions, horse-riding activities over security concerns

The Kano State Government has suspended all Durbar processions and horse-riding activities within the Kano metropolis until further notice. The directive followed an emergency meeting of the State Security Council held at the Government House, Kano, where members reviewed the security situation surrounding the planned activities. In a statement issued on Sunday by the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the government said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to prevent possible clashes, protect lives and property, and maintain public order. The government said security assessments indicated significant mobilisation of supporters in connection with the planned activities, raising concerns about possible confrontation and a breakdown of law and order. The statement said the State Security Council therefore directed that the planned Durbar processions and horse-riding activities be suspended in the metropolis. “The State Security Council resolved to take precautionary measures to prevent any possible confrontation, preserve public order, and avoid any potential loss of lives or damage to property,” the statement said. Peter Obi’s wife is godmother of my daughter not her husband – Nonye Soludo insists

In what looks like further rebuttal of the claims of the presidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, that he and his wife are godparents of Soludo’s children, wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Nonye Soludo, has insisted the claim is false. Quoting the canon laws of the Catholic Church, Mrs Soludo stated that Peter Obi’s wife being the godmother of her daughters does not make her husband, Peter Obi, to claim to be godfather of the child or any of their children, as sponsorship of a child’s Catholic baptism is usually on an individual basis. In a statement released by Mr Daniel Ezeigwe, Media Assistant to First Lady of Anambra State, Soludo’s wife stated that the laws of the church are clear on such matters. The explanation followed arguments that, as there is no difference between Peter Obi and his wife, the presidential candidate was right in his claim to being godfather of Soludo’s children, since his wife was involved. Parts of Mrs Soludo’s statement read, “There appears to be a deliberate, or daft, attempt by some people to turn a straightforward Catholic practice into something it is ever not. “In the Catholic Church, a baptismal godparent, technically called a sponsor, is a person formally chosen to undertake that responsibility for the person being baptised. Canon 873 of the Code of Canon Law provides for one sponsor, either male or female, or one male and one female sponsor. “The important point is this: the responsibility belongs to the person who is actually designated as the sponsor. If a woman is chosen as the godmother of a child, her husband does not automatically become the child’s godfather simply because she is married to him.
