Swiss reject plan to adopt stricter form of neutrality that would rule out NATO cooperation

Swiss voters on Sunday voted against a proposal that would have imposed a more restrictive form of neutrality on the Alpine country, preventing it from levelling sanctions without UN backing or joining military alliances except when under direct attack. Switzerland's centuries-long tradition of "armed neutrality" has not prevented the government from throwing its support behind EU sanctions on Russia following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
