‘Our people expect security that allows them to live peacefully’ – Zulum tells North-East govs

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has called on North-East governors to remain focused on security, saying continued peace is essential to the region’s economic and social development. He gave the warning at the North East Governors’ Forum (NEGF), on Friday at the opening of the forum’s 10th meeting in Maiduguri. Zulum, the chairman of the forum, said the North-East had recorded improvements in security in recent years, which he attributed to the sacrifices of the Nigerian Armed Forces, cooperation among the states and non-military measures such as the Safe Corridor Initiative. The initiative has supported the surrender and rehabilitation of repentant insurgents. Despite the progress, Zulum warned that the region must not become complacent, stressing that security remains necessary for economic growth, healthcare and education. The governor also highlighted several development plans by the North-east governors, including the establishment of 10-megawatt solar power plants in each of the six states. The states are also working with the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development to improve livestock production, animal healthcare and processing facilities. Zulum commended the North East Development Commission (NEDC) for procuring nearly 10,000 electric vehicles and e-tricycles for the region. The vehicles are expected to support transportation and economic activities across the six states. He also called on the states to strengthen systems for storing, processing and buying farm produce to reduce post-harvest losses and increase the value of agricultural products. “Our people expect results,” Zulum said. “They expect security that allows them to live peacefully, roads that connect their communities, schools that prepare their children for the future, hospitals that save l

North-East states raise N10.8bn for regional air shuttle

The six North-East states have raised N10.8 billion as counterpart funding for the planned launch of a regional air shuttle. Borno State Governor and Chairman of the North East Governors’ Forum (NEGF), Babagana Zulum, disclosed this on Friday during the opening of the forum’s 10th meeting in Maiduguri. Zulum said the remaining contributions would be paid before the end of October to allow flight operations to begin. “The establishment of the North East Air Shuttle is a significant step towards improving connectivity within the sub-region, and we look forward to the commencement of these operations soon,” he said. He added, “To this end, N10.8 billion has been realised as counterpart contributions from the governors of the North-east region. Insha Allah, the remaining counterpart funds shall be received before the end of this month, this year, with a view to actualising our dream of having the North East Air Shuttle.” The governor called on Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe states to work together to ensure the smooth launch of the airline. Zulum also highlighted other development efforts in the region, including renewed oil exploration at the Kolmani oilfield in Bauchi State. He said the project could create jobs, improve infrastructure and increase revenue for host communities. He also welcomed a $1 billion federal social protection project for households in the North-East, saying it would support communities affected by years of insurgency and displacement. Atiku, Amaechi draw crowd at filling station, promise ‘we’ll bring back fuel subsidy’

Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Rotimi Amaechi, attracted a crowd on Saturday when they stopped at a filling station to refuel their vehicle. Seeing the two politicians at the station, people quickly gathered around them, turning the routine stop into an impromptu interaction with the crowd. In a video circulating on social media, Amaechi was seen driving the vehicle while Atiku sat in the front passenger seat. As people gathered around the vehicle, some called on Amaechi to come out and greet them. During the interaction, the issue of Atiku’s campaign promise to restore the fuel subsidy was raised. Amaechi told the crowd that an administration led by Atiku would seek to reduce the cost of petrol by lowering production costs. “We will reduce the cost of producing fuel. We will bring down the production cost, and this will make the price of petrol come down,” Amaechi said. Atiku later stepped out of the vehicle and waved to the crowd as supporters cheered. Responding to calls about the subsidy promise, Atiku said in Hausa, “Zan dawo da tallafi insha Allahu,” meaning, “I will bring back the fuel subsidy, by God’s grace.” The brief encounter ended after Amaechi returned to the vehicle and drove away with Atiku.
