Naira exchange rate today, September 24, 2026: Naira extends depreciation against USD
The Naira extended its depreciation against the US dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Thursday. Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN data showed that the Naira further weakened to N1,328.67 against the dollar on Thursday, from N1,328.50 on Wednesday. This means that, on a day-to-day basis, the Naira depreciated slightly by N0.17 against the dollar. Meanwhile, at the black market, the Naira remained flat at N1,385 per dollar on Thursday, the same rate traded the previous day. The mixed sentiments across the official and parallel foreign exchange markets came despite the continued surge in the country’s foreign reserves to $54.83 billion, according to the apex bank’s data as of September 23, 2026. Xi urges Trump on China-US synergy, says AI must be human-controlled
President Xi Jinping met with President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday, urging stronger bilateral ties between China and the United States. The Chinese President believes most of the pressing global problems can be resolved if Washington and Beijing deepen their relations and maintain close contacts. Citing global changes driven by artificial intelligence and geopolitical shifts, he said China and the U.S. shoulder “a historic responsibility of advancing human development and progress.” Xi reiterated his dedication to developing the China-U.S. “relationship of strategic stability,” recalling that the international community had lauded the agreement sealed during Trump’s visit. Noting that the interests of China and the U.S. “are deeply intertwined,” Xi encouraged government departments to strengthen communication and “cooperate with sincerity.” “China-U.S. cooperation may not solve every problem in the world,” he admitted. “But, without our cooperation, it would be hard to solve many of the world’s problems.” With the two sides leading in AI, Xi said both nations have a responsibility to ensure that AI development “is always under human control” and serves the people’s welfare and prosperity. ‘I’m not sure I’ll be alive by 2027 election’ – Peter Obi
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has expressed concern about his safety ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying he is not certain he will be alive by the time of the election. Obi made the statement during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday. The former Anambra governor said he had been petitioned and investigated in different places. He added that he was unsure of what could happen to him. “As I speak to you, I have also petitioned, I’ve been investigated everywhere. I still hear that I’m not even sure whether I’ll still be alive at the end of this,” he said. Obi said he was relying on God for protection and appealed to politicians to allow a peaceful and democratic environment ahead of the elections. “I’m praying to God for His protection because at this stage, I’m not sure what is happening,” he added. He also called on governors to allow presidential candidates and other political contestants to campaign freely. According to him, governors had the right to support candidates of their choice but should also give room for others to participate. “Some of them will be campaigning for presidency tomorrow.
