US arrests woman accused of spying for China on Taiwan leader’s family

A woman accused of spying for China on Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s son and his family was arrested Sunday in the United States, US and Taiwanese officials said. This frame grab from video footage released via the X social media account of US Attorney Bill Essayli on October 4, 2026 shows FBI agents with Wanying Zhang (2nd R) who was arrested at the Los Angeles airport in California. Wanying Zhang, 34, is accused of acting as an unregistered agent of China and spying on a “close relative of a Taiwanese government official” in the United States, First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli said Sunday in a post on X. The woman allegedly surveilled Lai’s “son and his family — filming their home, vehicles, and reporting information back to (People’s Republic of China) handlers”, the FBI said on its rapid response account on X. Lai’s office confirmed Zhang’s actions had targeted the president’s family and said it was a case of “transnational repression.” China claims Taiwan is part of its territory and has threatened to use force to annex the island. Zhang traveled to Seattle in 2025 and, acting at the direction of Chinese officials, sent “photos, videos, and license plate information to those officials”, Essayli said. She was detained by the FBI at Los Angeles International Airport “attempting to depart for China” on Sunday, he said. FBI Director Kash Patel cheered the arrest in an X post, warning foreign adversaries that “America is no longer a safe place to run your espionage operations.” “Allegedly surveil a foreign leader’s family on US soil for the PRC — and try to catch a flight back to Shanghai? Not happening,” Patel said. Lai, who was elected president in January 2024, ha

The 500,000-square-metre facility comprises five towers and 37 operating theatres. The hospital’s opening will take place in two phases, with the first phase including the opening of the Specialist Outpatient Clinic Block – where the Family Medicine Integrated Centre is located – and the Oncology Block. Services from Queen Elizabeth Hospital are gradually being relocated to Kai Tak Hospital, while the Yau Ma Tei site will be redeveloped for other healthcare services. The opening of Kai Tak Hospital comes 10 years after it was proposed in the government’s 2016 Policy Address as part of a blueprint for healthcare development. The second phase of the hospital’s opening, in 2028, will include the commencement of accident and emergency services, which will be around three times larger in scale than at Queen Elizabeth Hospital currently. China slams US ‘lie’ over Starbucks stores in Xinjiang

China’s foreign ministry accused a US congressional committee on Saturday of “fabricating claims” after its chairman called on Starbucks to shutter two newly opened cafes in Xinjiang over alleged rights abuses. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun at a press conference on April 21, 2025. Photo: China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. John Moolenaar, chairman of the US House Select Committee on China, called the decision to open stores in the regional capital Urumqi on Tuesday “morally bankrupt”, and urged Starbucks to close the cafes — the company’s first in the region. The stores’ opening “ties an iconic American brand to the CCP’s brutal campaign against the Uyghurs”, he said, referring to the ruling Chinese Communist Party. Activists and foreign governments have accused Chinese authorities of widespread rights abuses against Xinjiang’s predominantly Muslim Uyghur minority, with the US labelling it a genocide. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun accused the select committee on Saturday of “habitually fabricating claims out of thin air for political purposes to attack and smear China”. “The so-called ‘genocide’ in Xinjiang is a blatant lie,” he said. The United Nations warned in 2022 of possible crimes against humanity in the region, including the detention of more than a million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in camps in the region. Rights groups say serious abuses, including forced labour, continue in the region.
