Mumbai, October 21, 2026: In a major crackdown on commercial fraud, the Special Investigation and Intelligence Branch (SIIB) of Mumbai Customs has foiled a smuggling attempt. Officers seized undeclared diamonds, gems and jewellery valued at Rs 10 crore, which were hidden beneath a false layer in an export consignment.Hidden Compartment Reveals Undeclared GemsThe operation unfolded at the Export Examination Hall of the Precious Cargo Customs Clearance Centre (PCCCC) at BKC. Acting on intelligence, customs officials intercepted a shipment bound for an international destination. The export company had filed a shipping bill declaring a cargo of 61.98 carats of lab-grown cut and polished diamonds, valued at USD 5,454 (approximately Rs 5.10 lakh). The consignment was packed inside a single tin box weighing 6.8 kilograms.While the top layer of the consignment perfectly matched the declared invoice, the authorities opted for a thorough physical examination. Upon force-breaking a hidden false-layer separator inside the tin box, officers discovered a deep cavity. Inside this secret chamber lay undeclared packages containing high-grade natural diamonds, precious gemstones and finished jewellery.A three-member expert valuation panel was immediately summoned to evaluate the cargo. While the panel certified that the declared lab-grown diamonds were fairly priced at Rs 5.10 lakh, it determined the fair market value of the concealed items to be Rs 10 crore. This brought the total valuation of the attempted illicit export to Rs 10.05 crore. The entire consignment has been seized under the Customs Act.Export Firm Representative ArrestedFollowing the seizure, customs officials recorded a voluntary statement from an authorised representative of the export firm, who is a resident of Surat.

Mumbai, October 21, 2026: The Bombay High Court has sought details of the documents allegedly used by a foreign national to obtain an Aadhaar card fraudulently, observing that illegal immigrants using forged identity papers to pose as Indian citizens pose a serious security concern.A bench of Justices Ajey Gadkari and Kamal Khata directed the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to submit the relevant records within two weeks. The order was passed on a petition filed by the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Navi Mumbai.ATS Seeks Aadhaar Application RecordsThe case relates to a March 2018 raid in Juigaon, Panvel, during which five Bangladeshi nationals were arrested for allegedly entering India illegally. Investigators found that the accused had procured PAN cards, voter identity cards and Aadhaar cards using forged documents, allegedly with the assistance of local facilitators.While UIDAI had provided documents relating to other accused in compliance with a trial court’s order, it had not disclosed the records concerning Bakaar Hasan Shaikh. The ATS approached the High Court under Section 33(1) of the Aadhaar Act to obtain the information.Court Flags Security ConcernsThe bench stressed the need for a time-bound investigation into cases involving foreign nationals who allegedly acquire Indian identity documents through fraudulent means.The judges observed that such individuals could use these documents to present themselves as Indian citizens, calling the situation a matter of serious concern that required prompt investigation.The court also emphasised the need to investigate the role of local accomplices who allegedly help foreign nationals enter India, settle in the country and obtain identity documents. Rajya Shiksha Kendra Issues Notices To DPCS Over Poor UDISE Progress In Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The Rajya Shiksha Kendra (RSK) has issued show-cause notices to district project coordinators (DPCs) over the failure to complete student enrolment and mapping under the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE), warning that the state's position has been tarnished at the senior level because of low and stagnant progress.The notices, issued on Oct 16, point out that 100% enrolment of students, including those under the drop box category, was to be completed by Aug 31, 2026. However, the department has found that districts have failed to complete the required entries, leaving a substantial number of students yet to be mapped and recorded in the system.The RSK- state education centre - department has termed the lapses serious negligence of official duties and disregard of directions issued by senior authorities. The notice states that the conduct is in contravention of rules and amounts to misconduct, asking the officials concerned to submit their explanations within seven days of receiving the notice. Failure to respond could lead to unilateral action.The latest UDISE status report, dated Oct 16, shows that 8,31,375 students remain pending in the transition data for Classes 1 to 12, while 8,45,522 students are listed under the drop box category. The two-day progress figures, comparing Oct 14 and Oct 16, show that the state has made progress in clearing pending entries, but the remaining workload is substantial. The figures also indicate gaps in school, student and teacher profiles, suggesting that the exercise extends beyond enrolment alone.Student profiles remain a major backlogThe report also shows a large backlog in student profile completion.
