The survey of 1,039 adults also found that people born between 1980 and 1995, commonly known as millennials or Generation Y, reported lower happiness scores than other cohorts. The sandwich generation ‘myth’ The findings revealed that over half of the city’s 30-to-45-year-olds are unmarried, and close to two-thirds are neither parents nor carers. Wofoo researchers say this “dispels the traditional myth” of the sandwich generation – the idea that Generation Y are pinned down by the pressures of being dual caregivers both for their children and elderly parents. Despite no significant differences in economic status, single millennials reported significantly lower happiness and life satisfaction scores than their married and parenting counterparts. This shows that unmarried millennials “are grappling with deeper challenges,” the researchers said in a Chinese-language press release: “Beyond anxieties about the current economic and social climate, they are mired in a sense of feeling lost.” Failing grade Hong Kong’s population-wide score has remained below the “passing level” of 6.0 out of 10 since 2023, with over 40 per cent of respondents this year reporting moderate to severe depressive symptoms. Hong Kong arrested nine people in a city-wide operation targeting illicit fuel activities, authorities said on Wednesday, as surging global oil prices continue to put pressure on the import-dependent financial hub. Authorities said they seized more than 30,000 litres of smuggled fuel worth more than HK$1 million (US$127,000) in September, arresting eight men and one woman. Criminals are using modified cross-boundary trucks or private cars with enlarged fuel tanks to smuggle fuel through control points, Chong Sin-han, a senior investigator at the customs department, told reporters on Wednesday. “Fuel prices remain persistently high, tempting illegal traders to sell more untaxed gasoline for profit and tempting citizens to take risks by purchasing it,” said Chong. Hong Kong’s Department of Justice (DoJ) has lost its appeal against a lower court’s decision to acquit former lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting of a perverting the course of justice charge linked to the 2019 protests and unrest. The case relates to a confrontation after a protest at Tuen Mun Park on July 6, 2019, about a month after large-scale demonstrations began. Lam and two others were accused by the prosecution of pressuring a man, known to the court as X, to delete images on his phone.
