Super highway: Ebonyi community demands compensation for destroyed farms, decries looming hunger

The traditional ruler, leaders and stakeholders of Ndiebor Ishieke Autonomous Community in Ebonyi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have demanded compensation for crops and farmlands allegedly destroyed during borrow-pit excavation for the ongoing Calabar–Ebonyi–Benue–Nasarawa–Abuja Superhighway project. The community also called on the Federal Government and the project’s contractors to ensure that excavated borrow pits were reclaimed, further encroachment on unmarked farmlands stopped, and adequate consultations held with affected landowners before additional excavation activities. The stakeholders made the demands on Thursday during a meeting with representatives of the construction company and project liaison officers at Alibaruhu Ishieke in the community, where they expressed concern that the destruction of yam, cassava, rice, millet, beniseed and other crops was threatening the livelihoods of residents who depend largely on farming for survival. Speaking on behalf of the community, the traditional ruler of Ndiebor Ishieke Autonomous Community, His Royal Highness Eze Hyacinth Awoke Nwiboko, said the community welcomed the federal road project but objected to the manner in which borrow pits were being opened on farmlands without what the residents considered adequate consultation and compensation. The monarch urged the contractors to respect the community’s land ownership arrangements and cultural traditions, particularly concerning the use of its forest reserve for the extraction of laterite for road construction in other areas. He called on the government and the construction company to ensure that the community’s concerns were addressed without undermining the anticipated economic benefits of the road project. Also speaking, High Chief Boniface Okpete, a stak

FAAC revenue: Some Nigerian Governors should be stoned for underutilising allocations – Ugomaduefule

An activist and National President of the All Abuja Residents Association, Comrade Igwekala Ugomaduefule, has said some state governors in Nigeria deserve to be stoned for underutilising huge allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) over the last three years. He made this disclosure during a briefing in Abuja on Thursday. According to him, despite the doubling of monthly FAAC allocations to states under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, development infrastructure in the states remains in poor condition, while citizens continue to live in poverty. He noted that Nigerians blame governors for hunger in the country and have directed their anger towards the heads of state governments. “What I am saying is that Nigerians should hold their governors responsible for not doing much despite the huge allocations from FAAC to the states. If all the governors were working in line with the funds released by FAAC, many people would not come to Abuja but would be contented in their respective states. “If Nigerians knew the amount of money released to the states, there are certain governors who should not be allowed to walk on the streets. They are supposed to be stoned,” he stated. DAILY POST reports that in September alone, the Federal Government, states and local government councils shared N2.428 trillion. Furthermore, a total of N14.045 trillion in FAAC revenue was distributed among Nigeria’s three tiers of government from February 2023 to July 2026.
