Pickleball to be more competitive in PHL as younger players, more tournaments emerge, say top athletes
Two of the country’s top professional pickleball players, who are also sports ambassadors for Herbalife, a health and wellness company, see the sport becoming more competitive locally in the next three years, saying that players are getting younger and more tournaments are emerging in the country. “In the next three years, some of them will be 16 years old. A lot of the good players are gonna come out,” Sarah Jane Lim-Narvasa, a leading Filipino female professional pickleball athlete, told reporters during a media interview led by Herbalife. “The level of pickleball generally will get higher,” she added. Leander P. Lazaro, who is regarded as one of the top pickleball players in the country, said the sport is likely to become more competitive as local tournaments, whether privately organized or government-funded, continue to emerge nationwide. He hopes that the country’s major sports events, such as the Palarong Pambansa, the country’s premier sporting event for elementary and secondary student-athletes, will follow suit to encourage young people to formally pursue pickleball. If the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) also adopts the sport as an event, players who want to pursue pickleball could have opportunities to obtain scholarships. “I feel like that’s the only thing that stops some juniors to (pursue pickleball), that’s why they instead pursue tennis. They just choose tennis to get a scholarship in college,” Mr. Lazaro told reporters. 13 Taiwanese green tech firms showcase solutions in Manila
Thirteen Taiwanese green technology companies showcased sustainable solutions and explored business partnerships with Philippine companies during the Green & Innovation Showcase held as part of recent Taiwan Expo 2026 at the SMX Convention Center Manila. Cambodia to target scam ‘masterminds’ as critics question crackdown’s effectiveness
PHNOM PENH — Cambodia is gathering evidence against suspected “masterminds” of massive cyber fraud operations, the country’s anti-scam minister said, amid criticism that the government’s crackdown has failed to reach those ultimately responsible. Legal action, “whether it involves the mastermind, the co-conspirator, owner, enabler or protector, it requires time and also it requires evidence,” Chhay Sinarith, who heads a government commission on combating fraud, told Reuters on the sidelines of a global anti-scam conference in the capital Phnom Penh on Thursday. “That’s why it is of utmost importance for us to cooperate,” he said, adding that information given by international partners had enabled action against some suspects and that premature disclosure of investigations could cause suspects to flee. Cambodia this week hosted representatives of more than a dozen countries — including the US and China — at the conference, for discussions about tackling an industry that has tarnished the country’s reputation and damaged its economy. Cambodia and other Southeast Asian nations emerged after the pandemic as hubs for industrial-sized scam centers where workers are trafficked, detained in grim conditions and forced to defraud strangers online. The US said scam compounds in the region stole $10 billion from Americans alone in 2024. Mr. Chhay declared last month that Cambodia had eradicated large-scale scam compounds since it began a year-long crackdown, though it has not provided a full list of the sites it has raided.
