At the Greenbelt 5 store opening on Aug. 11, BusinessWorld saw luxury children’s outfits from Boss, Chloe, the Kids Around brand itself, Givenchy, and Kenzo Kids. The look of the store is a little bit preppy, and all together cute: think a little pea green frock from Chloe, and little tennis sweaters from Kids Around. They could cost a pretty penny though: that little green dress alone cost almost P17,000. Hans Yao, president and chief executive officer of the Adrenaline Group, which brought the brand here, comes from the same family which brings Rolex to the Philippines through Washington Retailers, Inc. Through Adrenaline, he has also been responsible for returning United Colors of Benetton to the country, and bringing over Porsche Design. “If you look at our brand profile now, we are really looking to focus on premium to luxury brands. That’s the market that we’ve always been comfortable dealing with,” he told BusinessWorld in an interview. The Adrenaline Group has also brought Jacadi, a similar French children’s retailer, to the Philippines. “We really find that there isn’t any competition when it comes to the premium to luxury kids’ segment,” he said. Mr. Yao pointed to the luxury market in general to explain why expensive outfits for kids make sense. “This year hasn’t really been a good year for retail. But if you look at the luxury segment, it’s still very strong,” he said. “We feel that this is the segment that is resilient all the way. Regardless of whatever economic downturn there may be, people will still buy luxury.” Practical advice though says that kids should be clothed simply (they do outgrow the clothes quickly). “I agree with the statement, but I think now with how everything’s on social media, parents and grandparents are willing to spend,” he said. “They want to dress up their kids. They want their kids to look good. In the age of social media, parents like to show off their kids too.” The age range for the lines is marked at 0-16. “The journey there is hopefully, you start with us (as a) baby. As you grow up, you get upgraded towards wearing these throughout your entire childhood, up to your teenage years,” said Mr. Yao. But it’s not just kids having fun: we spotted moms going through caps and bags and trying them on themselves. According to Mr. Yao, abroad (Kids Around has about 85 boutiques in 29 countries), “For the accessories, it’s actually the moms who buy it for themselves.” Over at the boys’ section, some clothes in sizes 14 to 16 also fit some fathers. “This is a market not just for kids, but for moms — and I would say dads, as well.” Kids Around is located at 3/F Greenbelt 5, Makati City.
