The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has described the personnel who died in the Monday crash involving an ATR-42 aircraft in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government, Ondo State as highly trained, professional, and intelligent officers. Aneke stated this when he visited the crash site to assess the ongoing recovery efforts of the submerged aircraft. The Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft, which was flying from Benin City to Lagos, crashed on Monday morning near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, killing all 25 passengers and crew members on board. Aneke disclosed that he had directed his Superintendent of Safety and Evaluation to assemble a high-level delegation comprising of necessary stakeholders to get to the bottom of what happened. “I basically knew everyone on that flight. I’ve flown on this aeroplane. My family has flown on this aeroplane. I know each of the crew personally. “This is not the time to start speculating, and I plead with you, general public. We’ve lost people who are fighting for the nation. Gov Yusuf reconciles Barau Jibrin, Abubakar Kabir over APC rift in Kano

The reconciliation meeting took place in Abuja on Wednesday and lasted about two hours, with the two All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders discussing their differences and the need to work together in the party’s interest in Kano. The disagreement between Jibrin and Kabir was reportedly linked to competition for political influence and control of party structures in the state. Their rivalry also triggered exchanges among their respective supporters. Yusuf appealed to the two politicians and their supporters to end the dispute and focus on strengthening the APC. He said cooperation among party leaders was essential to ensuring the party’s success at different levels. The governor also called for unity behind President Bola Tinubu, the Kano State Government and other APC candidates, stressing that disagreements were normal in politics but should not be allowed to damage the party’s stability and progress. 14,000 Niger residents blind from cataracts, 5,000 new cases recorded annually

About 14,000 people in Niger State are currently blind from cataracts, with an estimated 5,000 new cases added to the backlog annually, the Niger State Ministry of Health has disclosed. Dr Halima Isah Umar, Chairman of the Niger State Eye Care Programme and Head of the Eye Centre, General Hospital, Minna, disclosed this on Thursday at a press briefing in Minna to mark the 2026 World Sight Day, observed annually on October 8. Umar, a Consultant Ophthalmologist, said cataract remained the commonest cause of blindness in the state, accounting for about 50 to 60 per cent of blindness cases. She said the 14,000 figure represented people already blind from cataracts who had yet to receive treatment, while the annual increase was largely linked to ageing. According to her, lack of awareness, the cost of surgery and limited access to eye-care services were among the major barriers keeping patients from treatment. Umar said the current intervention was targeted mainly at indigent patients, with between 30 and 50 people expected to benefit, while a larger project planned by the state would target about 1,000 beneficiaries. She said patients with non-surgical conditions would receive free treatment for infections, glaucoma and allergies, as well as reading glasses, while those requiring specialised care would be referred. Umar said cataract was largely age-related and could not be completely prevented, although healthy living and proper control of blood pressure and blood sugar could help slow its progression. She said surgery remained the established treatment and warned residents against unproven eye drops being promoted as alternatives.
