Cricket in the 21st century: 25 ways the game has changed | Phil Walker

For its 100th issue, Wisden Cricket Monthly has identified 100 ways the sport has developed this century. Here are 15 things we have gained and 10 we have lostUnblessed with much pace, staying agile lest they get left behind, the game’s seam bowlers are a resourceful bunch. The popularisation of the wobble-seam delivery has been transformative for a new breed of trundler – we’re talking Vern Philander, Mohammad Abbas, Scott Boland, Sam Cook – whose innocuous pace is offset by an uncanny ability to land the ball on the edge of the seam so it jags away off its initial path. The delivery – first perfected by Stuart Clark, then adopted by Stuart Broad and described memorably by the great bowling coach Troy Cooley as a “dirty seam” – has helped to usher in an era of nosediving batting averages, where bowlers now hold sway. Drishyam Actress Shriya Saran Reveals Why She Had Hired Only Blind People In Her Spa - FPJ Exclusive

Shriya Saran will soon be making the most of her escape plan during the upcoming October 2 Gandhi Jayanti national holiday, along with Ajay Devgn in Drishyam: The Conclusion, the final part of the franchise. However, when we caught up with her one evening over dinner in Goa recently during the trailer launch of the movie, there was another aspect of her life we wanted to know more about. In 2011, she opened a spa where visually challenged individuals were employed. While Shriya informed us that it is no longer functioning, with the pandemic sounding its death knell, she explained in detail about how the idea for it had come about. ‘Blind people have super sense of touch’“It was located in Lokhandwala, and I had named it Shree Spa. We had trained therapists and masseurs, some who were completely blind, and others who had around 15 per cent vision,” Shriya said. But what prompted her to take such a significant step, which involved the investment of time and money?“I spent a lot of time in the blind school which was opposite my own (DPS Mathura Road, New Delhi), where I would see the blind children playing cricket,” Shriya told us. She and her mother, Neeraja, realised over time that there were hardly any employment opportunities for visually impaired people in India. And that’s what led to the idea of the salon, as blind people have a super sense of touch, helping them to give massages which were better compared to which others would be capable of giving. The pandemic may have led to the closure of the salon, but we at The Free Press Journal sincerely hope that the universe pays attention and showers some magic onto the revival of this brilliant idea that Shriya had implemented, leading to the reopening of this spa, and then some more. Are the Angels of Mumbai listening out

Pakistan’s England nightmare deepens: 11 WTC points docked, 50% fine — here’s why

Pakistan lost eleven World Test Championship points and faced a fifty percent match fee fine. This penalty resulted from a slow over-rate during their Test series against England. The team suffered a disappointing 3-0 series defeat in Birmingham. Pakistan captain Babar Azam accepted the proposed sanction for the offense. This deduction further impacts Pakistan's standing in the WTC standings.

15 vs 3.33: How struggling England side swept Pakistan 3-0

Pakistan lost a wicket on the first ball of the series and, on the last ball, misfielded as England completed the whitewash. In between, there had been three Tests in which Pakistan rarely looked competitive, often looked unprepared and, by the end, barely resembled (literally) the team that had landed in England.

Stephen Fleming inherits intriguing squad after England’s unsettling summer | Ali Martin

New Test head coach’s arrival and Root’s calming influence as captain add to promising signs in the post-Stokes eraAs Joe Root calmly ran the rule over the Test summer and reeled off the ways in which it had been “chaos”, “unusual” and “unsettling” for England, it felt telling that first among them was Ben Stokes calling time on his international career during a match and a series that were both still live at the time.Cricketers announcing their retirement mid-game is nothing new. Heather Knight went on to do the same during the women’s Test at Lord’s two weeks later. Root is also too loyal to Stokes to question openly whether that scene-stealing exit before New Zealand’s win at Trent Bridge was entirely in keeping with his call for “selfless cricketers” four years earlier. Dan Lawrence took two wickets in the end but the lack of a specialist was keenly felt on a day when Pakistan dug in against an all-pace attackAt half past two in the afternoon the fans struck up a conga in the Hollies Stand. Fifteen Fred Flintstones, 11 Oompa Loompas with one Willy Wonka, five cardinals with an inflatable doll, four centurions, three six-foot bottles of tequila, two Dave Bedfords, one Geri Halliwell, one Donald Trump, and a Dolly Parton bringing up the rear. Out in the middle, England’s four fast bowlers were flogging an endless succession of back-of-length balls at the Pakistani middle order, who blocked and ducked and slashed and cut.It was round about this moment that the Pakistanis could, perhaps, have been forgiven for asking whether English cricket was quite the force we’ve all been led to believe these last few weeks.
